B29 CHASSIS REGISTER

1975 saw the introduction of the B29, Chevron's offering for F2 and F Atlantic. Results were generally disappointing especially in F2 were the design was hampered by not being run by any top line team/driver. In F2 the best results of the year were a hat-trick of 4th places, twice courtesy of Hector Rebaque at Thruxton at the end of March and Magny Cours at the start of May and once for Hans Binder at Zolder in September. The only other B29 drivers of note in F2 were Harald Ertl who only raced occasionally as he concentrated on his F1 Hesketh drive and Jean-Pierre Beltoise who was saddled with the hopelessly unreliable Chrysler-Simca powered ROC cars, the French engines suffering from head-gasket and overheating problems as well as a lack of BHP.

The F Atlantic B29 variant proved more successful especially in the UK. Things got off to a promising start in the MCD/Southern Organs non-Championship race at Brands Hatch when Richard Morgan finished second at the wheel of the Wheatcroft Racing B29. Morgan went one better in the opening round of the F Atlantic Championship, the John Player series, when he won at Mallory Park a week later. Jim Crawford got into the act in the second John Player round at Brands Hatch by finishing second and the achieving the same result in the next two rounds. David Morgan then joined the ranks of runner-up with second at the 5th round.

Things then went quiet for the next few rounds until Jim Crawford bounced back with a win at Brands Hatch and a second at Snetterton. Alo Lawler showed improving form to take second at Silverstone in July and Crawford won again at Mallory Park at the end of August. The John Player F Atlantic world was given a real shake up for the last 5 rounds of the series when Gunnar Nilsson joined in with the Rapid Movements B29 and promptly won all of them!

In Ireland Patsy McGarrity dominated the Irish F Atlantic Championship winning 8 of the 14 rounds but in all honesty it was a very weak series with fields struggling to get into double figures and being bolstered with non-F Atlantic cars. The nadir of the Championship was the final round were McGarrity was the only F Atlantic in the six car field! Alo Lawler also took a single Championship race win at Kirkistown in July.

In Canada results were reasonable with Bill Brack taking one win and a brace of second places in the 6-round Players (Canadian) Formula Atlantic Series.
